Reliant Resources
Reliant Energy is one of the original incumbent electricity providers in Texas that was spun off from their generation assets when Texas deregulated their electricity market in 2002. They are one of the largest and most recognized electricity providers in Texas. In 2009 Reliant Energy was purchased by NRG and has since expanded their service territories to include Illinois, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C.
New Jersey based NRG, one of the largest energy conglomerates in the United States. NRG operates more than 25,000 megawatts of energy generation capacity, including nuclear, wind, solar, natural gas and coal assets.

I really love their customer service any time of day or night. The rate with their Power Tracker plan is really low, and the automatic debit card payment method at no extra charge is simple. I like to view my account online, and they let me go paperless to do that.

A Little Higher, But Worth It
I have been with them going on a decade. (Prior to moving back to Houston, I had them and in 2000 I again signed up). While, in theory "it's all the same when you flip the switch" the issue is more about WHOM you select and HOW long they have been around. I would thus prefer to be with the people who have been in my area since day 1 as opposed to some fly by night company. Yes, I pay about 6% more than a fly-by-night ma-and-pa electrical company started in someone's basement in Waxahachie, TX - but I prefer the safety net of the people who know the grid the best. Their customer service has been always above measure, and my history with them lends me the afforded measure of getting prompter responses. Just because it's cheaper somewhere else, ask yourself why.

Higher rates for honest
I've been with Reliant in Houston since the beginning before dereg. I've always thought of changing companies, but every time I do and begin to research the others, I always find serious complaints about others' customer service and especially overbilling or cramming new plans onto existing customers. Reliant has never done any of this to me, and while I pay a penny or even 2 above some "cheaper" advertised rates by the newbies, I trust Reliant to give me the bill I deserve. I have a new digital meter, so it's pretty hard for anyone to overbill me now that I can see the numbers. Reliant Energy has a good enough Web site that shows billing and usage history. I am on average billing, so get the same $ bill each month. I'm happy enough to stay with Reliant. I give them a 4/5 stars. I don't give a 5 to any one because I am mad at general rates for energy, but this is not really Reliants fault.

30+ Years of Good Service
I've been a Reliant customer since 1980. I've considered changed providers over the past few years but, when I read reviews about the other providers, I realize that Reliant is just as good as any of the others. Sometimes I've gotten locked into a price that was higher than I'd have liked but that was my own fault. I also had occasion to contact Customer Service last year when an obvious error was made in reading my meter (before the smart meter installation). The representative was very helpful and scheduled a re-read of the meter immediately. She did advise me that I'd have to pay a service fee if it was found that the meter reading had not been in error, but the reading WAS in error and my bill was amended right away. I really like Reliant's Home Energy Audit program and I also really like being able to track my energy usage online by the hour/day/week. Those two programs have helped me focus on how to reduce my energy usage.

very happy
i just signed up for Reliant again. Our house is large and we use 3 to 5 thousand kilowatts a month. My last plan I was paying 6 cents a kilowatt hr. So I couldn't call them without a charge. Big deal. I was saving 300 hundred dollars a month compared to a couple of years ago. Heck that is worth the hassel of emailing if I have too. I am about to start paying 7.5 cents and its 100 percent renewable energy. Now I am green and still getting a pretty good deal. The service representive was very nice and I barely had to wait more than 2 minutes to talk to her and no service charge on that call. This time the calls are free. YEA! I am so happy.

Wonderful Company for me, but the renewal is something to think about
I been having Reliant energy for over a year now. I like some of the customer service Reps since some show attitude over the phone. I don't any problems with their plans since i always research my info before signing up. (to the ppl complaining about the rates being 8c etc and after taxes is 12. pay attention to the EFL because that is where you get your break down. the rates do not reflect taxes ONLY surcharges from the utility company in the area like for me in houston is center point, dallas/forth worth oncor and this is the ppl that have the right to raise those surcharges and that is why your rates are high) i have been satisfied until now that i have to renew the options are not that great but surely will research more

Great service
Have been with Reliant for about 3 years. I watch the offers on Power to choose website, and take the best offers that are available, staying with Reliant, because we have had such a good experience with them. We have some rental property, and sometimes had to have power turned on,temporarily, at a house after it has been vacated for us to do some work there. They have always been very efficient at taking care of our needs. Currently, our plan is about to expire, and Reliant is not anywhere near the best rate. I am not opposed to changing companies, to save money, However, I hate to leave Reliant. So I have been reading reviews, and every company has horrible reviews, including Reliant. I am thinking that most don't post a review until they have a bad experience, and it sounds as if that can happen with any company. I don't care for TXU. They tell you on the phone what their special rate is, and not until you pin them down will they tell you what it will really cost you, after the fees. I want to know the bottom line. I have always felt like Reliant has been honest with me, and felt that TXU was trying to trick me. After all that has been said, I don't know who I will go with, but will never allow any company to have direct access to my bank account, regardless of what I have to pay.

Reliant Is Good Provider
I have had good experience with Reliant. It appears that for long term customers, they offer special plans that are otherwise not available. I believe a lot of people's complaints result from their not understanding the pricing structure upfront and they may not analyze their actual costs and compare provider rates properly. Also, many people do not realize how much their actual usage can vary from month to month. To get the best understanding of company offers, the monthly power consumption in kWh from the previous year should be used to the calculate each month's cost under the new plan offered by each considered provider using the base cost of the power provider, plus the base cost of the transmission line provider and his other additional costs, the power cost of the power provider, the power related cost of the transmission provider and any other costs on the Electricity Fact Sheet. Using this method to calculate the total annual cost for each provider considered, provides a fair comparison. It is important to carefully read all parts of the Electricity Fact Sheet because of additional fees not mentioned in the pricing section.

Free weekends are not really free.
I just had the free weekend plan for a month. Friday 8pm to Sunday midnight is the "free" time. The label is here:Average price 11.5¢ per kWh, based on 2000 kWh, includes the following:Energy charge per kWh: 12.2¢Base charge per month: $0.00ONCOR Delivery charges passed through without mark-up : $6.48 per month and 2.8876¢ per kwhWell, it looks great at first and low usage people like me with five months of below 500kwh would not have much choice.I still have to pay oncor charge (2.88c per kWh) on free weekends.Hope this will help anyone thinking about the "free" weekend plan.

No problems
Ive had Reliant for almost a year now. Never had any problems with them. Im about to switch only because Ive found lower rates elsewhere. The only thing I don't like about Reliant is that at the time of contract expiration they offer higher rates. If you research their rates and find a better deal then they will honor it, but they should offer all of their rates not just higher ones. Its all about business to make money, I understand. Ive never had problems with their payment system, and the customer service reps were friendly and informative when I had questions. The online chat is a little slow. I found answers to my questions before the online reps responded back to me, but at least the option is there I guess. Overall, good company, no problems. I love the weekly summaries of usage, and alerts to notify you when you are close to your budget. I like them, just wish they were a little more competitive with their current rates.

Great service at Reliant
i have been with Reliant for years and have had great service. I have usually been on term plans of 12 months and when I discuss options with customer service, they provide good options - usually lower priced plans with different term or different monthly charge. I find the bills easy to read with the summary on the front page and all of the details on the next page. I would highly recommend anyone to try them out. One other thing - the web site is easy to use and easy to read.

Couldn't Be Happier!
We've been Reliant customers for 8 years, and have never had a problem of any kind. The best things about Reliant are the Customer Service and the Webpage. We get emails and texts daily to let us know how much energy we are using, at what time, and on what, hour to hour! We know every day what our anticipated bill will be, and have plenty of time to make changes in our usage that have an immediate and direct impact on the bill. They have online chat, 24/7, and we don't ever have to wait to get a hold of a customer service agent, who are always "T-Mobile-Nice". Currently, my favorite thing about Reliant is my new plan; I think it's called Free Weekends 24, and I LOVE IT. we get charged nothing for our energy use from 8pm Friday through 12midnight Sunday, and we just wait to do laundry and really enjoy our air conditioner on those days. it's reduced our monthly bill this month by over $100! I really just can't say enough about Reliant, and frequently refer friends and family to them. Everyone says they sound too good to be true, but 8 years later, the other shoe still hasn't dropped. I think they are the real deal!

Lo-ong time user
I have used Reliant since before the breakup of the monopoly when it was HLP. Had a few problems before computer technology, but they were quickly fixed. Usually had to do with mis-reading the meter. I'm on Reliant Secure 12 plan, with Bill averaged over 12 mo. 1 person - 1,000 sf. - Aug 1291 kWh, Sep 1131 kWh, Oct 826 kWh. Bill each month is from $100 to $111.Time to renew and was looking for a lower rate. I guess there are some, but the monthly delivery charges get you. And company reviews. Ugh!Remember, most people only write reviews when they are angry or frustrated (I'm no exception). Since most of the reviews for ALL companies were negative, I'll just stick to the tried and true. At least I know bill will be every month.

I am very pleased with one of the Reliant staff named Samuel. During our chat he took the time to go over different plans and made recommendation on the plan that meet my needs. I have been paying over $300 per month for my electric bill during the summer season. The new plan - Secure Advantage 12 I am able to save over $100 per month. I also explain to him about my parents who are in their 90's and needing a lower electric bill. He suggested that the Reliant Learn & Conserve 24 plan is more suitable for their needs.
Samuel is very professional and takes time to go over different plans and options that are offered through Reliant. I appreciate his dedication and commitment in meeting the needs of Reliant customers. He is definitely an asset to Reliant and deserve a bonus and pay raise.

I forgot to make a payment and my power went out. When I called customer service both agents were so nice and did everything they could. One lady even wanted to give me numbers to churches that could help pay the bill. Which I didnt need but was a nice thought. Still shocked at how nice everyone was

Best Price, Great Service
Reliant had the best month-to-month pricing I could find at the time, which seemed too good to be true, so I expected the rate to jump up the following month. So far with the second month, there has been no increase. I also really like the monthly estimated cost and energy use notifications as well as the website itself, which is very good in my opinion.

Best in Tx
Two young men in Walmart approached me with information. Normally, would not have taken the time. The appeal was free nights. I work as a housekeeper. Get home @ 6 pm, turn AC down, do laundry, cook, shower. Literally, Reliant saved my bank account. Was paying between $2-300 per month on electricity. As a healthy senior, that was still a large amount of each months funds. Cant say enough about Reliant Energy, truly rescued a senior trying to survive. Now I am revived, cool and clean for the next day for unbelievably low cost! Not paid for this review, just so truly blessed by this company!

Better than my last 2 companies!
We moved to our first home about 4 months ago (we were in an apartment before) and took the opportunity to try a new service. The agent I spoke to got us an amazing deal for first time homebuyers. He also got us in contact with their security side of the company who beat any quote that Vivant, ADT, and a lesser known company could offer. Anytime that I have had to call in regarding my account the agents have always been friendly and helpful. I used the chat service for the first time today, and it was also a great experience. I would definitely recommend Reliant.

Reliable product and fantastic customer service
While I used them for my needs, Reliant had reasonable rates and I never experienced an outage like I had from other providers. The place they really shined was helping me cancel their services, oddly enough! I spoke with a friendly support person who assisted me in terminating my account due to DV related issues. I would happily work with this company again just because they proved they cared more about my safety and wellbeing than my money.

Mrs Drama Queen
Hi as you may guess yes I am Mrs Drama Queen. I just became a customer today and power was scheduled for turn on today. I thought when i was approved with 0 deposit it was a good day that it was my lucky day. NOT! First off it was not from Reliant all that had happened , had happened. I had been living with my In-Laws for the past 7 months , 5 days , 4 hours , 57 mins. , and 15 seconds. Yeah that bad. Anyway a house my Mother In-Law owned all of a sudden became ours. My husband and I's. I had to go through drama to get the people living there out. Finally I had to get them evected. So out they went. I am not sure exactly when but they were gone by the time I went by yesterday checking to see if it was cleared so I could starting moving. Well people when you move into a new place dont forget to check everything including the utilities if they were on or off. As far as I knew they were on that pay as you go electric. I had told them a few days before to shut everything down that I wouldn't carry them , so yesterday I assumed all was off. Today I called around for Power and up tell Reliant none of the others made any sense. Seriously! When I was approved and told my Power would be on today. I was excited. My husband he has serious seizures. Especially in hot mugging weather , which was what it was like today. My husband has what they call Grandma Seizures which is the worse of it's kind. And almost all of the time when he has one he ends up in the hospital , at times as long as a month. Anyway after a hour went by I got on my tablet , found Reliant signed up waited about a hour then got on my tablet again , going to Reliant's web page and the lady who helped me ( think her name was Sandra ) was calm , polite , and very helpful. She assured me that the power would be turned on. So after logging off I waited for almost 3/4 hours. You ever have the feeling of pure panic run through-out your body? I did! I was scared out of my mind. My husband usually is the only one who can calm me down. Well he was Pail as a ghost. That's when I started calling again. What they on the other line didn't know , ( the Reliant Customer Service Person ) was I couldnt drive my husband to the hospital , and my tablet refuses to let 911 calls go through. I didn't tell them this , honestly I didn't think it would matter to them. Then my phone decided to have a mind of its own it kept shutting down , and always just when I was about done. It did this about 4/5 times , each time I had ( at least I thought I did) to start over. They , in total I believe was three no four operators , all started out with getting me calm and I would tell them what was going on , never failing right on cue that's when my tablet decided to venture on it's own. It shut off. Well this went on until the 5 time and then I think Juan C. Is his name. He stopped me before I got first sentence out , he said no problem that he'd would read the notes or what not and he'd be right back. Minutes later he was confirming the questions and concerns i had expressed to the other Operators. He said no problem got it. Guess what , yeap my Tablet went blank I wanted to scream , but instead I cried. That's when it happen !Bam! Power! The Power came on. Well my husband is good. He took a cold shower and rested. As the night winds down I remembered what JuanC had said right before being disconnected, he said no problem I got it. And I'll be dam he did just that. Now I on the other hand , Yes I am doing fine but after spending 4 hours on and off the phone , not knowing what I'd do if my husband had one of those moments , I am now off to the liquor store I think it's a good night for me and Mr. Patron to get to know each other. Thanks Reliant for being what all the other electric companies swear up and down to be , but aren't. That's honest , caring , helpful in times of need , a friend. Well all at Reliant ( Especially the ones that had come to my rescue ) Stay safe , and Healthy And Please.......... Educated sales service!
So I've begun shopping for electric providers now due to covid and at the need for at-home savings, I had the privilege of working with Mr Anthony Trevino out of Grand Prairie Texas. I've always considered myself a smart shopper but never in the area of electric costs. And I've never worked with Reliant Energy ever. My experience today was enlightening to say the least. I spoke to someone that was passionate to not only sell the product but to genuinely help me learn and break down what every cost means. And although I did not make a switch today (due to some transition), when I am ready and I will be, Anthony Trevino at Reliant Energy will have my business that's for sure! Thank you Mr Trevino for making an educated Electric Energy Shopper out of me and making me feel better about this life decision. Claudia Martinez Pena

Overcharge their long-term customers and will charge you at end of your contract
Have been with Reliant for 6 years. Every year, they would increase my rate for the same plan. I realized that they charge about 1.5x the rate of their competitors for comparable services so I decided to switch providers when my latest contract expired on 9/10. Two days after my contract expired, I received an email confirmation stating that my contract had ended and that I would no longer receive power from Reliant because I had switched providers on the day my contract expired. I paid my final bill and thought that was it. I just received another bill today for an additional $117. I contacted Reliant and they stated that the bill was due to an excess usage charge of 1300 kwh that I had supposedly used on 9/9 - 9/10 (1 day of service). I argued with them saying that there was no way I could use 1300 kwh in a single day when that was my usual MONTHLY usage. They said the usage was reported by TDSP so I went on the Smart Meter Texas website and found that I had only used 40-45 kwh everyday for the past month, including the dates in question. I ended up paying the bill because I was tired of arguing with Reliant and they were not offering any resolutions. All I know is that this entire experience provided reassurance that I made the correct decision in changing providers. I will be communicating to whoever I can to not use Reliant because not only do their upcharge their customers, they are dishonest in their billing practices.

No real issues
I have not had many real issues with reliant. However, I have only been with them the two years I have reisded in TX, so I don't know any other company. The rates have been RATHER steady, with only about a $30 change across the months. I know each month I will have about $100 worth light bill. But the highest I have paid...when the plan kicked in, was about $120. I hope to find a better rate and lower prices now that I am trying a new company... who knows?? I will surely let you know when I know something and my feelings toward reliant may be a little more negative! :)

Trying to renegoiate with Reliant Energy
We have been with Reliant Energy since Jan 2011 under a 6 month contract. We were notified by mail that our contract was nearing the end and we would need to re-sign. Our rate was 8.1 cents per kWh. Now they are offering us 10.6 cents. A big increase and at a time that has proven to be Texas' highest electric usage months. Have had no problems with service since switching from TXU but can't justify the jump to 10.6 when there are so many other companies out there offering better rates. So I'm shopping. Would consider staying with Reliant but they seem more interested in getting new customers than keeping current ones. If they would match a rate that another company offers I'll stay. But if not, I have to think of my pocketbook and what's best for our family. Wish me luck.

Too good to be true
Switched to Reliant when they had a come-on 5.2 cent rate a few months ago (Basic Power Flex). Sadly, they just jacked it up to 8.1. They don't tell you, so you have to monitor their website. Still a pretty good rate so we'll stick with them for a while but we may have to shop around again shortly if they stealth increase on us again. Anyway, we had a good run of 3 months of low bills in the heat!

Finally they began to send paper bills, and I mailed in payment as I couldn't get their website to work. I don't like that there is a fee for calling customer service. However, the online chat is free, and the customer service through that was very good - they did solve the problems.Overall they are okay, .

Easy to read billing. Good price in beginning. Renewal rates not good.
We switched from TXU a yr ago. Their bills are simplified. They quote flat rates i.e. oncor delivery charge, etc. However, now that our one yr fixed plan is up the "only" options they have "at this time" (per cust service rep) is an energy charge of 11.0/kwh or 10.5/kwh. I am not paying 5.9/kwh. There are some other charges but those don't change. When searching on powertochoose I found not only does reliant offer plans (same 12 month fixed) at 8.9/kwh. AND other companies are offering 7.7, 7.9, etc. They told me to go online to my acct & see what else is offered. IF I don't find a better rate (than what she quoted) call back bc they don't want to lose my acct. WTH - why not save us all some time & just be competetive now. Why do I have to go online, call back, blah, blah, blah? And btw - online only offerd 11.0/kwh.

Company makes it difficult to optimally renew.
Was with Reliant for 3 years and received letter explaining contract to expire in less than a month so called Customer Service. Verified all information with Mario only to discover he couldn't discuss matching competitive rates. Transfered and verified with a lady who, after hearing my request for a 12 month contract at a lower rate, put me on hold - twice. Didn't like the rap music so I hung up the second time and although a recall number had been requested, never heard from Reliant in the next 2 hours.Apologies if I sound like a curmudgeon but I just wanted to renew at a rate being offered by multiple other firms. Much like the TV providers, Reliant seems to be more proficient at attracting new clients rather than renewing present users. Oh well, contrary to what their business model indicates it's too easy, cost free and seamless to switch so, 'Hello Brilliant Energy'.

Reliant Energy - one of the better Centerpoint Energy providers
Here are a few things to expect from most energy companies:1. After your contract ends, the energy company will send you a notification of your rate increasing to a variable rate (which usually translates to 2-3 cents higher/kWh by a certain date). They are supposed to notify you of this change. I've noticed as a customer, we get short-changed of one month from the contract rate (if you signed for 7 cents for 6 months, you'll only get that for 5 months). Then your rate goes up significantly if you don't call to change to a cheaper contract 2. Most companies have this basic $9.95/mo charge if you don't meet a certain kWh, usually 1000 kWh. That will pose a problem in those more temperate months like in the spring and fall because although you're paying lower kWh,you're paying that extra $9.95/mo for no reason. ASK YOUR ENERGY PROVIDER WHAT THE LIMIT IS. I got a minimum of 800kWh/mo with Reliant; if I go under 800kWh, I will have to pay $9.95. Good thing about Reliant is that they do a weekly energy usage report, and you can keep up with how much you may owe. That's pretty useful to me, considering I live in a smaller space, thus less usage.3. Make sure to ask about any extra fees you should be aware of. That's how a few cheap energy companies can get you. For instance, ask if there are new connection fees, activation fees, month-to-month fees - pretty much ask them how does their offer compare to other companies. Although Reliant is not the cheapest company, they are relatively helpful when it comes to electronic notifications and online billing. Their customer service seems to be confused most of the time, but bilingual (spanish and english, useful in Texas). They aren't hard to get a hold of like other companies people have complained about. I've had them for a year now, and although my electricity isn't that cheap, it's comparable to other companies I could have went with. Every 6 months, though, I have to call and change my plan to another 6 month contract to keep costs "low." People are more likely to post negative reviews than positive reviews - for every one positive review, there is probably 5 more negative reviews for energy companies. Just keep that in mind because everyone's negative personal experience has actually gotten me to ask these companies the right questions on what to expect.

they all get your money one way or another
the reviews here for reliant energy are mostly unfavorable...yes, there are some cheaper plans out there, but doing the comparisons takes a great deal of time, and in the end, there are added fees or a difference in a disconnect or change fees that make up for a few cents per kw hour rate..i have been a customer of reliant energy since the start,as i had houston lighting and power before that who changed to reliant energy, who is now reliant energy an nrg company..sum total it comes to well over 30 years at different residences..their telephone customer service is ok,not great, but at least they answer the phone..if you have a problem, you are referred to centerpoint energy who actually handles the transmission of the electricity and any outages, and their telephone reps can be rude..reliant is basically just the billing name or so i was told,,in fact, centerpoint handles most of the electric companies you can choose from and they read the "smart meters"...if you rplan was changed to something "similar" to what you had (this has happened to me a few times)it is because of changes in regulations and lately , because of the new smart meters that can be read from the street..i am disappointed they no longer have the "wind driven" power, but if you want that, it is about 14.5 cents per kw with the other companies...overall reliant is as good as the others...i will have the newest "nights and weekends" plan when my contract expires, so i may change my mind!!

Great at first; Bad renewal rates
I was really happy with Reliant when I signed up. The rate was one of the lowest offered and their service was reliable. After my 9 month contract though, the rates offered to me were ridiculous. I rarely go over 1,000 KWH and they must count on that because the cheapest rate offered was 13.1 cents per KWH. Only when you go over 1,000 KWH did it start to come down but marginally. After looking at what the other companies have to offer, I'm canceling with Reliant. I would think that if they were truly concerned about their clients, they would make loyal customers who pay their bills on time want to stay. Judging by the rates they're offering, that does not seem to be the case at all. Goodbye Reliant. With a market for energy, who needs you? I can get the same service somewhere else for a lot less.

Excessive Transmission Charges
Been with Reliant for forty years but feel it is now time to move on at the end of the current plan. This month my electricity usage was $90.00 and the transmission and other charges dinged me for another $50.00. I haven't seen such high charges for transmission since I have been on this current horrible plan. I am a senior so I am concerned.

Straightforward and honest
After 2 years with another electricity company in Houston, I switched to Reliant. The switch was very easy. Reliant has slightly lower rates than other companies in Houston area. Most importantly Reliant runs a fair and honest business. Their contract is more customer-friendly than other electricity companies I tried. There are no secret fees stipulated in small print, unlike in Green Mountain Energy. I pay a reasonable bill every month.I have had no problems with Reliant so far. I would definitely recommend Reliant over Green Mountain Energy.

Once the promotion ends
They had a good promotional price when you sign up with them, but the pricing after contract and what they have to offer is less desired. Even when an account manager contacted me with a better promotion which I calculated to what my usage last year was everything would be $30+ dollars more a month. Its a hassle shopping around and switching, but you need to do with you need to do. Customer service is great and no hidden charges, but the pricing will not be comparable to what you sign up for. If you are able to understand the charges that you can calculate the price differences from other companies. Don't focus on average pricing. To estimate costs take your energy charge and add it with delivery charge which would give you your base cost per kWh. Then there is the recurring fee of $8.72 for delivery charges from every provider so that is standard. Also be weary of base charge. Reliant doesn't charge this but some companies do. Also note even with the added base charge a company could probably still be cheaper because of the lower kWh charge. Some plans have variable energy charge for instance if you use 1000 kWh you get a charge at 5.2 cents but if you go above that say 1001-2000+ kWh then its 8.9 cents. Definitely pay attention to that if you consume 1001+ kWh. Either way they will get your money just depends on your usage as they say. You might pay more for less but if 3 months out of the year you use less then 1000, then the savings for your usage will be noticeable if you are a high energy consumer.

Used to be better, as a 5-year loyal customer, impossible to enroll a plan at new customers' rate
as a customer with reliant for over 5 years, i think it's time to leave.it used to be pretty easy to fix the rate whatever the plans i could find online, but not the case any more since about a year ago. rep keeps telling me, you're not eligible for this, not eligible for that, and trying to trap me to sign a much higher rate pricing plan instead.in past 5 years, the overall experience was pretty smooth, no disconnections and just few glitches here and there.but business is just business, customers are looking for lowest rate indeed, and there're companies with quality service too.

Reliant is Overpriced
Reliant plans were a bit overpriced, and the only way to get a competitive rate is to sign a long term contract with a cancellation fee. For someone with good credit, I found this to be a bit cumbersome. Their ordering wasn't difficult, and they have a decent ability to manage my account online, however.

They Take You Granted Because They Can
I grew up in Houston & was an HL&P/Reliant customer for almost 10 years. When the market deregulated, I stayed with Reliant to see how things would work out. I remained a happy Reliant customer for a while. It wasn't until a few years ago that I realized that it was time to switch. Reliant's prices were so much higher than almost everyone else's in the market that I realized that I was probably losing over $200/year by sticking with them. I think they charge more & are able to maintain a high customer base because of their brand & individual customer laziness. I still check & compare prices regularly between providers & I am still amazed when I look at Reliant's prices. They remain much higher than almost anyone else. The other thing that irritates me about Reliant is that they charge customers more that live in apartments. If you go to their site, you'll see that if you enter an address with an apartment number, the prices are different than if you enter one without a number.

Unfair Cancellation Fee and Lies
I called Reliant to check my contract status, and was informed that I was free to switch at any time. When I did switch providers, I got a final bill with a $100 cancellation fee! When I called, they said they had no record of my call, and they can look back for years. When I showed them my cell phone records, they said that I had called, but I didn't speak about rates or my contract. They flat out lied to me. I'm still being charged. I would not reccomend dealing with these chumps.

Why Abuse Me?
I have just found out that by staying with Reliant month to month but unsigned that I have been gouged! A customer rep now tells me that by remaining unsigned they were allowed to charge me $0.165/kwh (in a $0.113 market by their own monthly price Flex Plan) even though I am one of their lowest cost type customers since they have no forward price risk in serving me. He kindly offered to move me to a plan that would get me true market cost based service but it is too late...I will be going to the competitiion over the abuse of their abuse discretionary pricing.

I've been with Reliant for 3 years. I first signed up on a 24 month plan to keep my rate fixed. The rate at the time was less than TXU. 1 year into the contract I moved. I was forced to keep Reliant or pay a huge fee to break the contract. After the move, I got a huge bill. Apparently they didn't keep me on the contract and rate I was on before the move. They then put me on another 2 yr contract with a rate of almost 15. My electric bill was higher after the move. I went from a $150 bill in a 3 bedroom house to a $200 bill in a 1 bedroom apartment. My contract is now up and I am switching ASAP.

Awful Customer Service, Noncompetitive Rates
Recently my 12 month "Cap and Save" term contract expired. Reliant made 2 renewal offers. One floating rate plan (power tracker @ roughly 10 cents per kWh at $3/MMBtu Natural Gas), and continuation of a Cap and Save (approximately 11-12 cents per kWh). These rates are uncompetitive, with current offers sub 9 cents per kWh. I chose Power Tracker so I was floating month to month to explore my options. I never received an EFL for the plan, nor was I able to view it online. My account said that I would be able to view the documentation 3 business days after the transition took place, meaning that I wouldn't receive the EFL until the 3 day Federal "grace period" for cancellation was over, leaving me liable to pay a $150 cancellation fee (per Reliant Customer Service) even though the plan is advertised without a fee. In response they offered the same Cap and Save plan at 11 cents per kWh, when they are offering 9.1 cents and 9.5 cents for 6 and 12 month fixed terms on PowertoChoose.org. They refuse to offer me a lower rate, so I cancelled service and moved to Amigo energy for 8.6 cents per kWh (12 month fixed). The only thing I was satisfied with was order experience and billing. Orders were completed on time, and billing a non-event.I would not use Reliant, but if you do, be prepared to switch services after your initial contract expires.

Reliant does poorly at retaining existing customer!
I moved to Houston two years ago from out of state. Choosing an electricity supplier was a new experience for me. I started out with Reliant so have been a customer for two years. I called customer service yesterday to find out when I can switch without paying the early termination fee. I never did find out. I intended to switch because the rates being offered to me were at least 2 cents per kwh higher than what is available from other providers. Eduardo kept me on the line way too long presenting offers. I asked to have the EFL sent to me for an offer than finally appeared to be reasonble. He claimed not to know what an EFL was! I told him I would not agree to anything over the phone an hung up. I will switch to someone else now just because that call was so irritating and why should I have to call to get a better rate. They should try to keep my business without making it a hassle.

After 30 yrs. of being a loyal and responsible paying customer....I assumed Reliant was givingme the best rates possible in order to keep my business. WRONG! They try to offer you another plan which appears to be a lower rate but the surcharges are doubled or tripled. Read the fine print before signing up on a plan. Do the math ,,,,,there's other providers offering cheaper rates, no base pay, cheaper energy rates, and cheaper delivery charges. If the plan is vague and doesn't spell out an example of what your monthly charge will be with an itemized list of ALL the charges which are added on.....they are hiding something.

Reliant put on an Allied Warranty plan to protect A/C units and wiring , etc . Although I agreed on the phone to try it . Supposed to send information to us to decide . Did not happen . They crammed the plan on the back of the bill , where people never looked. Cost was $ 16.99 a month , We did not notice the charge for six months because they sneaked it on the bill. I complaiine to 4 different people, and one said we should read our bill better . Complained to PUC - no help. Finally I asked Jeremy Rogalski from KHOU to get on the casae. They refunded our money within a day , just at the mention of the I Team. I think they wanted to shut us up, and they will be happy if we leave Reliant . There are probably a lot more people than us who were deceived in a sneaky way . I hope KHOU actually continues with the investigation. We have been with the same people for 40 years , but they hav completely lost our trust. You have to be up front with people , and they do not do that.

That there was enough money in my account at all times. After an hour of my bank representative talking to Reliant we were disconnected. I also had conversations re; the issues where Reliant said they would take the 'payment returned' off my record and had me fax the information to their IT department re; their website/bank problems.....they now have no record of my fax submission nor that they said they would take it off my record. Poor Customer Service
I have been a Reliant customer for over 8 years, and have been generally happy with their online account system and their various plans. However, when it was time to renew early in 2013, I had very few plans (no wind plans at all) available to me in my online account. When I called, the rep described a few more plans that were "only available through a customer service rep." When I asked for an online or mailed copy of the terms and conditions for my review before I signed up, he said that wasn't possible. He was able to answer my questions, but unable to provide the terms in writing before I signed up. After I gave the poor guy an earful (he was just reading from a script) and told him I was very unlikely to renew with Reliant after this experience, I asked to speak to a manager. I was put on hold, but after about 10 minutes I decided it wasn't worth it and hung up.Reliant appears to have gone downhill in my opinion. In my opinion their customer service is poor, and their available plans are not that competitive. I am currently searching for a new electric company.

Billing nightmare
I switched to Reliant while I lived at house #1 and received great service. I loved the easy to read bills. When I inherited #2 house I decided to switch the service there to Reliant from TXU- THAT'S WHEN THE NIGHTMARE BEGAN!2/15/2013 Was my last bill from Reliant for the #1 house only3/18/2013 My first combined bill from Reliant was due 4/3/2013, , it listed only the #2 house address and was for $342.01 I went online and it said my charges were $190.81 I called customer service and was told they would be sending a single bill with a single total for both houses. I asked if it was possible to have that split in some way and was told only if they shut down the bill averaging program, I paid full rates for a month and then went back to the program. I asked why the two different amounts- that's a big difference between $190.81 and $342.01. She said she could not tell me what had happened. 3/21/2013 I received CORRECTED INVOICE for $190.81 4/17/2013 I received Invoice for $140.00 (no address on face of bill) AND an Invoice for $224.00 showing #2 house THEN on 4/19/2013 I received an Invoice for $156.33 showing #1 house AND and Invoice for $188.33 showing #2 house AND an Invoice for $259.33 showing #2 house 4/22/2013 I went online, and paid the amount shown there of $259.33 by credit card as I was about to leave town for two weeks. I called TXU and switched Milam Street to TXU thinking if they were only billing for one property the madness would stop. 4/25/2013 I received Invoice for $58.41 no address shown Invoice for $-245.93 showing #2 house Invoice for $-302.14 showing #1 house At this point I gave up and called TXU again and moved #1 back to them 4/30/2013 I received Invoice for $133.48 showing #2 house 5/3/2013 I received Invoice for $191.79 showing #1 house I went online to make sure of what I owed and I am mailing my final payment to Reliant , which is for $191.79 I emailed all of this info to Reliant (with addresses and invoice numbers) and got a canned response asking me to call them as they would be glad to discuss my account with me!!! At this point, I was tired of hearing "I don't know why you are receiveing so many invoices"

I am so disappointed in the customer service and their payment systems. I have consistently paid my account online with my debit cards and twice they have sent back my payment with a $25.00 charge on my account. I have only been with them since January! They claim that my bank has sent back an insufficient funds each time, this caused me to call my bank since I knew i had the funds in my account. My bank stated they showed no record of Reliant energy trying to pull my funds. They would be able to see when they attempted it. I even had the bank on 3 way call customer service still was unhelpful and claimed no accountability for the denied transaction. I am leaving them before my subscription is up..... $50.00 later in fees and $150.00 cancelation fee is a lot but I do not like having to worry about my electric being turned off, unaware they returned my payment.....beside the fact that I have probably spent a full day on the phone with them when you add my calls up. Their customer service is inept and useless in helping with any billing issues...... if you choose to pay online with your debit card plan on paying more and spending more time on phone.

Leaving.....Again
I have had good experience with Reliant but It appears that for long term customers they don't offer special plans that are otherwise available. My contract is expiring after a year and all the plan they offer me are much higher than the plans they have listed on their website. This happened the last time I had a year contract with them, so I'm leaving.....again!

Bill has doubled
I am going to switch due to the sharp increase in my bill over the summer. My apt is 750 sq. feet, and I kept my thermostat set at 82 during the day, 78 at night. My bill went from about $50 in July to $90 in August. This month (September), I have turned my air off between 7:30 am and 7:00 pm, and kept it at 82 at night. My expected bill will still be $81. A co-worker lives in a house with twice the square footage and keeps her thermostat set below 70 at night. Her bill is only $140.
I have not tried talking with customer service. The account management is easy, I think, the high prices are just not worth it.

Planning to switch
I am with Reliant for almost 3 years. But this time when my contract ended, I went to my account. The only plans they show are most expensive and long term, It seems like they wants to lock me in at higher price. When you go to their website without logging to your account, they show bunch of other long term cheaper plans. This is deceiving. I have decided to make switch.

Reliant increases delivery charges randomly
Be careful when you enroll with Reliant. The delivery charges vary haphazardly and usually goes up. I am now paying as much for delivery charges (CenterPoint Delivery) to Reliant as my Electric use. I know that CenterPoint charges $10 to Reliant. Reliant loves to mark this up using various reasons.

A representative came to my house and show me lower rates and would help us, I couldn't turn it down and for about a few months rates were good but then my bill doubled. I even checked to see the difference in usage and nothing different except I use a space heater in evenings but it wouldn't double from $119 up to $300. It got to I couldn't keep up and reliant will not help other than offer deferral plan but we know how that is. Sad when youre on time with payments and all they give you is a deferral plan with a switch hold. I refuse to deal with them again, Im going back to Firstchoice!

Poor Customer Service Policies
I had major issues with their customer service POLICIES, at least they are telling me their "policies" don't allow them to help. They charged me twice because I have an automatic bill pay, but when online and paid in advance and apparently their computers unlike every other company in the world can't figure out how to override, so they charged me two days in a row the same thing. Then their "policy" doesn't allow them to refund the money for 10 business days, again like EVERY OTHER COMPANY they can't just credit the money back into your account they MAIL A CHECK. I feel bad for their customer service because their policies are setting them up to fail...what an ironic name for a company too...

Regret Changing To Reliant
Sales rep who came to my door took my elec bill from the previous month, calculated some numbers and showed how Reliant's per kwh was higher but because weekends were free I would save money. WRONG For less kwh usage total (including weekend hours), using my old company Pennywise would have saved me $40 to 55 for bills in the last 3 months. I cannot believe it and I did the math with the rep and believed every word he said. RELIANT IS A RIP-OFF

Very high cost per KW
I left Reliant after doing the math on my bill by hand as opposed to reading what was printed on there. The price per KW was a lot higher than what was printed on the bill. Most companies include the transmission fees in their cost per KW. Reliant does not include these fees and it seems like they are cheaper. One thing I did like was the ability to track the amount of energy you used from your smartphone. Unfortunately even though I was consuming a lot less energy than all my neighbors, I was probably paying the same amount since my price per KW was alot higher.

Will not own up to mistakes!
I've just had probably one of the WORST customer service situations with Reliant! BEWARE. I rarely complain about a company but I will here. I had our utilities transferred to our new address over a year ago and then a few months ago we start getting bills in the mail for a different account that was started under my name at the same address that I was at before. The account had been opened for a few months before we contacted Reliant asking them what was going on. After talking to at least 5 different people we were told to send in paperwork proving we lived at our apartment that we had been paying utilities on for over a year already. We did that and then apparently that was not enough to "resolve the balance" and they were going to still make us pay it after more than likely they made the mistake and opened the account up on their own. So, we were required to fill out an Identity Theft Affidavit of which the police would not fill out their required section because they did not see it as identity theft but as Reliant's error. This issue has been going on for a few months now but they have finally taken the balance off my current account and have since closed the other account. I had to jump through so many hoops to prove a very obvious point: I did not setup a new account at my old apartment after I transferred our utilities to the new one. Why would I do that?! And still no apology or credit given after I had taken so much of my time to fill out paperwork, email, talk on the phone, and go to the police station twice to figure this thing out. I've been a loyal customer for 4 years now and I've paid all of my bills on time. This is how they treat people. Awful. We are finished with Reliant.

Best to Worst in 2 years
I have been with Reliant Energy for past 2 years and loved then. When my first year was up they offered me a similar plan to what I had been on so there was no reason to even shop around I accepted on the spot. This year when my Plan was up the best plan they offered me was to RAISE MY RATE 75%!! You read that right 75%. I called customer service and even though they were nice as always they had no power to offer me a better rate at all. I went to power to Choose and found a company with a good rating that offered me a rate 17% less then I was paying! So I will end up paying less next year rather then almost double that Reliant tried to offer me. Actually this same thing happened to me 4 years ago with Startex so it pays to shop around every time you renew. Shame on you Reliant You lost me for life!

bad online chat customer service
it's about time for my current plan expires, and I followed the previous representative's advice to wait for one month and then check back to see what plans are available. So, today I login back and connect through online chat customer service and asking for help with the available plans detail. This online chat customer representative does NOT show patience with me, and just keep pushing me to stick with current plan with rude attitude as how I feel , and just keep saying the plan they offered me is the lowest rate plan I can find any where else, and say they offer lower rates of renewal than new customers plans; which turned out not true while I provided him what I found on line, but he simply replied that's not available for renewal. then I asked for what other plans available, so i can consider, he just impatiently reply average rates of two plans and then then end the conversation, not even asking if I have any further question. very rude attitude. I have to say that, I never got so disappointed with Reliant as being a customer with Reliant for 4 years.

Good rate, easy to monitor energy usage online. BUT THEY WILL NOT GIVE YOU REFERRAL CREDIT LIKE PROMISED
Started my plan on 04/2016 and still did not receive the referral credit for mine and my friend's account. I chatted with agents many times online for explanations to why I did not receive the $50 referral. They were professional and seem to be willing to solve the problem. They apologized and assured I would get the referral credit in the next billing cycle. One disappointment after another, still did not receive the credit. I am not sure if it is a system problem or If the company is trying to save $50. I contacted them 4 times, and I am starting to feel voiceless. I don't know how to go about the situation, therefore I am here to voice it so you guys would not be surprised when the referral credit doesn't come in.

My 1st contract with them was great with very competitive rates. But after it expired my next 2 contracts the rates kept going up and up. Finally I had enough and just switched to TXU Energy and now have lower rates then my 1st reliant contract. They also told me my plan ran out on the 27th of the month so that's when I had TXU take over but in reality my plan ran out on the 25th so this way they sent me a 2 day bill which the usage was only $4.88 but they got to hit me with 1 more monthly base charge. Be aware of this compamy
Everything with Reliant takes months to process. On the top of that, their customer care representatives push the costliest plan they have to the customers to reach their sales quotas. They make it difficult to leave a contract, and try to squeeze every penny from customers in every possible way.
They didn't approve my application the first time I applied for electricity in July, though I had submitted all the required documents. Rejected my application almost after a month, during which I was fined heftily by my society. Later when I applied for the second time, one of their customer (dont) care representatives gave me the costliest electricity plan available with Reliant and now my electricity bill is increasing every week. I have submitted a request to change my plan and the timeline given to me is 2 months. THIS IS RIDICULOUS!

Reliant customers pay for their employee mistakes
We switched to Reliant several months ago and are almost at the end of our current contract. We have 2 accounts- residential and commercial. My husband told the lady from Reliant that we wanted our residential account switched to Reliant. She stated she did not need the ESI number for that account. Well what she did was switch our commercial and the manger told us there was nothing he could do. We ended up paying an early cancellation fee for the commercial and was charged twice for the electricity for the residential since that contract expired. Thanks for costing us roughly $300 Reliant because your employee didnt know what she was doing and made your customer pay for your employee mistakes!NEVER again Reliant!!! Creepy Sales Rep asking too much personal info
I recently moved and started a new Reliant account. The sales rep asked me a lot of very invasive and personal questions, such as "when do you get home from work" and are you at home on weekends and if not, how long are you gone from your home" and on and on it went because "he was trying to figure out which plan would suit me best". I finally had to put a stop to it and tell him that he was making me uncomfortable. If Reliant is asking reps to get this personal with customers, it really needs to stop. It's just plain creepy, especially for a woman that lives alone. If I had another choice of provider, I would've hung up on him after the first question. Unfortunately, Reliant was my only option so I just have to cross my fingers the rep was not a stalker with all of my personal information at his disposal.

I hired Reliant to supply my electrical service, and I have been a top A-One customer of paying my bill on time. Reliant need to intervene with Oncor as to the reason why it has been 13 hrs. and counting for the re-connection of my service. Ive been with Reliant for approximately 45 years,of course at different residences in the city of Houston. Ive been pretty happy with Reliant until I moved to 3903 Portman Glen Lane in 2004. Ive gotten up in age, and since time each time theres rain or a thunderstorm the electricity and the gas are turned off. Each time it happens there are problems with the fuse box, with the air conditioning unit. the water heater, and the light bulbs. At this time in my life I cant afford repairs that cause certain items to have shorter lives. My range is affected, and my washer and dryer. As well as my television sets, my refrigerator, and my garbage disposal. Id like to know why these interruptions in services occur and what is your company doing, if anything, to resolve your issues. Thank you.

Reliants prices are very sketchy to me. Every single month my bill increases, even if I used less energy than the previous year in that same month. During this terrible COVID pandemic, which has created very hard economic times, especially for a young widow trying to raise two children alone, I feel like your company is just hitting me at every possible turn. I do not have the energy or time to even care to look into another provider because I am barely capable of navigating the death of my husband right now, but I thought you should know your bill, which I can barely pay each month, is the bill I dread receiving the most.

I tried talking to customer service, but it was like talking to a robot; no feelings, no empathy, no caring about your extremely high bills, even though you're a senior with a fixed income. Fine but crazy expensive
So far the customer service side of things has been fine and we haven't experienced outages unless it's a block-wide one. However, I was jumping between plans every 3-6 months to save money on power before this. Our usual power bill (slight variation during seasons) averages around $50/month. After signing up for reliant for a long term plan my bill instantly jumped into the hundreds. I'm not saying there are sketchy charges, but when signing up I definitely did not foresee some small extra fees becoming big enough to almost double my bill. As soon as my term is over I'm dumping this. I'd recommend hopping plans to get better prices than going with a long term one like I did. Definitely a mistake I won't make again.

Reliant has battled me for almost a year now. They promise a google hub max when you sign on for a 2 year contract. Reliant energy has screwed me over because in my initial phone call where I agree to the contract I said the words "Google hub" rather than "Google Hub Max" so currently I've been denied the right to null my contract for inaccurate promotions. Reliant has defended their contract by sending me a Google Hub Mini and stating that everything gis now settled on their end and if I'd like to leave I MUST pay myself out of their contract. Have no issues with billing, But a company that cannot uphold their promotional offers for new customers is no company I would recommend. Choose your words wisely with Reliant Energy. I would also like to mention that multiple agents have confirmed my issue is easy to fix, However no manager that I spoke to would assist me in correcting the issue.

I recently had to move from one Texas town to another for work. The apartment complex I moved into has a contract with another provider, so I was not given an option of which electric provider to select. Reliant is charging me a $150 early termination fee, despite not having the selection of providers at my new residence. When I called to speak with customer service, I am informed there is no way to credit the termination fee. I have been a long time Reliant customer, but when my lease is up in a few months and I move into my new home, I will no longer be a Reliant customer nor will I ever provide a positive recommendation, on the contrary I will advise all friends and family to avoid Reliant.

If what they are most recently promising is true, (as if I believe them) I won't see the reward until 6 months have passed. They are now offering me another $50 to renew my plan. They spend lots of money promoting this, but don't deliver. What gives?

Unfair Cancellation Fee and Lies
I called Reliant to check my contract status, and was informed that I was free to switch at any time. When I did switch providers, I got a final bill with a $100 cancellation fee! When I called, they said they had no record of my call, and they can look back for years. When I showed them my cell phone records, they said that I had called, but I didn't speak about rates or my contract. They flat out lied to me. I'm still being charged. I would not reccomend dealing with these chumps.

Worst Electricity Experience
After Hurricane Ike, they naturally raised the price on my electricity without any kind of notice. When I switched providers after moving, I called and canceled my account. When I called to verify a week later, they hadn't canceled it, and they claimed they wouldnt be able to cut off service for another week, and I was stuck with the bill.

Reluctant to negotiate new contract
Because my old electric company went under last summer Reliant became my default company. I signed a 2 year contract with them out of desperation. The rate I was paying was outrageous compared to rates offered in 2009 so I tried to get them to renegotiate. They refused. Same old Reliant. That's why I left them in the first place

How to hide potential benefits
how can an individual be taken for granted when the prices of service had not changed but was a factor in a decision to get someone else to service you with energy, and now it has increased in triplicate from $ 250 to $950 per month. Why is it happening? I have lived in the same location for about nine years and never had a service bill of this sort during that period. I have had all the same appliances during the period indicated. I would liuke to kno0w Why! The exclamation that I received was that my usage tripiled, which was not so or accurate, knowing my household. I would not or will not recommend any person(s) to this agency and if possible I would put same into a newpaper articule for others to view, because it is like being stuck up without a weapon revealed.

Reliant has no customer service, especially if you are a current reliant customer and want to get a rate quote or switch plans to get a lower rate. I called customer service and was on hold for over 30 minutes and finally gave up. I tried to get a quote on their website, but it continually refused to accept my reliant account number. I emailed them and asked for quotes on other plans. Instead of sending me quote information, they emailed back and gave me the customer service number that I had already tried before with no success. As soon a I get a better quote, Adios Reliant!

I know reliant is the top company in this area and I'm not sure if that is a good thing. They have these rules and their people have no flexibility to work with you. I will give an example. I paid last months bill which I will admit was late. I had gotten a shutoff notice. I got an extension of a few dys and paid with a check online as I always do. My bill was 563.38 and the next bill was 645.00 which I paid with a debit card. Well, my quarterly homeowners insurance payment was taken out of my account and caused my payment to reliant to be returned nsf. They are still going to turn off my power even though I am only late for one month

We have had reliant for about a year and now we are going to switch because of the flex plan being extremly expensive. We live in a small two bedroom apartment and our power bill has hit 400 dollars three times!!! We couldn't make a full payment one month because it had been 400 dollars two months in a row, so we payed what we could and they shut off our power without giving us a notice or email or clall or anything!

Terminated without Notice
Our service was scheduled to be terminated to today with Reliant. This
was the last straw, we broke our union with Reliant before they could
extinguish our account. A service manager with reliant told my spouse
that our service would have to be closed and reopened with the
addition of fees and other charges we had no idea were being tacked
onto our bill. Our bill always stays current and paid, but due to some
unforeseen, undocumented regulations that Reliant seems to be
having an issue with on their side of the spectrum, we were being
forced to lose power today.
I was livid, my spouse was angry and we kindly and politely parted
ways with reliant. Not to mention past events with them where our
service was terminated for being .01 short of paying a past bill.... .01!
Can you believe that? Good riddance Reliant. And for those of you
who are thinking of switching to Reliant, Don't. Save yourself the
headaches, poor service response times and snail-paced customer
service. Not worth it!!!

Happy to leave Reliant forever.
Reliant always blamed AEP for their billing mistakes. Example, I was overcharged 5 out of 12 months. I had to sit on the phone and told that if the meter was re-read, I would be charged a,I think $10 fee. My question to them was if they were wrong, were they willing to give me a $10 credit. They were wrong 5 times out of 12, but of course, they declined my offer. I know this much. Reliant doesn't offer competitive rates and "nickel and dime you to death" with all sorts of fees. Do not recommend them at all.

Twice, they grossly overcharged me. For a 2/2 apt, we averaged $100-$120/mo on a fixed rate plan. This last time they overcharged, they claimed we used over 3000 kwh in a month! The bill was $300+! I called their customer service line and explained to two reps, who agreed and sent me to their manager. She said while we waited the 30 days for Centerpoint to check and make sure the meter was working properly, she'd defer my payment. What she neglected to mention was screw it, we're charging you late fees though we've deferred your payment. And then they pulled a $200+ bill the next month, though I was gone all month and my roommate gone half for work! After 2 months calling them and arguing the point, what do I get? Not a return of the $45 check-your-meter fee, and definitely not a retraction of the "late" payment. I was supposed to receive my final bill/refund in 3 weeks. 2 months later, nothing. Way to screw up, Reliant. I wouldn't refer them to an enemy, much less a friend.

I needed some help with my bill. After a few

resolve this situation. Reliant would never acknowledged their mistake. Now I will be
contacting the BBB, the FTC, and their
licensing agency. Plus, Reliant will lose a
long time customer. I've been a customer since
2007, and could not get anyone to resolve this
matter. I may have lost $212.00, but after I
switch providers, they will lose thousands. In
this economy I can't afford to lose $212.00.

False Advertising Everywhere
Reliant has a facade. They come off as having great plans, specials,
promotions and coupons, but when you try to sign up for ANY of these
there is a huge catch that puts you in a bad situation. I especially have
issues with their coupons because they only state what you can have
and not what you have to sign up for. Most coupons tell you in small
print what you have to sign up for to redeem. However, Reliant has
mover coupons that you receive through the post office that state you
can have X-amount of dollars off of a bill for signing up with the
company and in no way does it say you have to get a certain plan to do
this. It comes off as a sign on incentive but really is a ploy to get you
to sign one of their lengthy contracts. Their plans all have a "catch 22"
cell phone company feel to them and I do not recommend this
company. I have been a customer for a couple months now...my bill is

Unfounded tampering charges
In my last Reliant bill, I was accused of tampering. The bill was $800; my former bills have been an average of $70. I was told that Oncor has proof of my meter being broken; that somebody has damaged the cover and that they therefore billed me with the estimated usage! I unsuccessfully spent about 3 hours on the phone with Oncor and Reliant; I tried to file the formal dispute via email towards Oncor; their reply was that the "Retail Electric Provider has to dispute the charges on the customers behalf". I have neither broken nor manipulated my meter by any means, nor did I use the amount of electricity I'm being charged for. I do not intend to pay any of the tampering charges that Oncor claims. I talked to the Police department for false claim of fraud but I can't file a report, because I don't own the meter. I also talked to an attorney and he suggested taking this to small claims court. It's ridiculous that they charge me for electricity I haven't used! I'm very disappointed!

Learn how to AVERAGE!
While we have never had any issues with customer service or receiving our bills, the rates were always high, so we signed up for average billing to have a consistent bill. We had already been with the company for a year and it was explained that they could take our past years usage as well what we were currently using to estimate and average our bill. It also helped with budgeting to have a consistent bill. In the end, our term is up and we now owe them $250! What the h$$$! My bill was pretty consistent. It seemed like they knew what they were doing. They have computer systems for this. It seems like they could do a much better job at averaging than this. It's simply ridiculous!?! Needless to say we will be changing companies due to Reliant's incompetance, high rates, and silly litte extra fees.

Reliant is a company you continously have to negotiate with. You have to go at least 3 levels to their "negotiating" team. Be prepared to state you have a lower offer. You call one number and they can only offer you so much, which is normally about 1 cent kWh less than the offer. Be prepared to spend some time with them if you want to stay with them. I hate that I have to do this, but feel most companies do this anyway. Guess that's how they have the stadium in Houston named after them. Someone has to pay for the name, but I won't. Shop the competition so you are prepared with any offers they throw your way. All in all, we are after the lowest rate, so why not offer this to us from the beginning.

WORST ELECTRIC COMPANY!!!
I have had a few electric providers in the last 6 years and this is by FAR the worst! I went with reliant because the rates I found online beat the other competitors. I wish I had read the previous reviews before enrolling in a 2 year contract... I signed up online entering the address, for connection on 6/22 which was the closing date for the house. The closing then got delayed a week, and when we came in the house on 6/28 the power still wasn't on. We called reliant and they said their computer says its on since 6/22, but we will send out a tech to look at the meter within 2-3 hours. The tech came and left, without leaving a note or even knocking on the door. We called Reliant again after about 6 hours when the power still wasn't on, again they said the computer says the meter is running and its connected. Took about an hour before they realized that the meter that is connected is for the sewer lift station next to the property, and the actual house they put an "A" at the end to tell the difference between the two. I then spoke to two reps who told me that they will put in a service ticket and I will not be responsible for charges to the lift station since that belongs to Harris Co. Mud. I checked online and charges were still on my account along with a new charge for $64 for connection and service fees for the lift station. I called again only to be told, they would put in a new service request and I would not be responsible for charges. Received a bill in the mail on 8/6 stating that it is due for 8/13 for the lift station, called back 3 times spoke to one rep and two "supervisors" to be told that the issue has been reviewed by two departments and it was not their error, and I should have called to set up service instead of doing it online and this wouldn't have happened...if you dont reccomend doing the online set up due to probability of errors, then why is it available??? Needless to say I will never be going with reliant energy again, the discount in rate isn't worth the 10+ hours I've spent on the phone with them over the last month!

Awful Customer Service
Had Reliant for a few years - switched over based on cost.
When moving and cancelling service, their customer service was awful! We keyed in all of the information after following non-intuitive phone prompts, then told the lady our information and then was transferred and had to tell our information again. Repeatedly. We gave them the forwarding address for a refund due - but they instead sent a credit to the old address. We called again and again had to follow phone prompts with information and then verbally providing info and then being transferred again and providing our info again... When will it stop? We moved into a house with service in place and did not need Reliant. We told them again - so we'll see if we get a refund or not.
I do not recommend using this company - they apparently use 1 armed blind monkeys as customer service reps. Clearly they had an issue with listening and were rude. It's a pathetic statement of how American companies handle customer service and one that I see as a trend - unfortunately.

Terrible customer service
Without letting me know, they put a hold on my account that does not allow credit card payments. This was put on, as they told me, as a result of two credit card payments not being able to go through. I was shocked when they told me this, but then realized that I had my credit card stolen twice in the last five months. After explaining the situation to the person on the phone, their supervisor, and their manager, no one was able to do anything about it. They forced me to give them my checking account routing number to pay for it, which is completely unsecure. I use my credit card because I get mileage from it and if there is any fraud, the credit card company will cover me. Paying this way gives me no added benefits and I get stiffed with the bill if someone decides to use the information in unethical ways. This little rule they have is all to help them with no concern to a customer who has never had an issue paying bills with them nor anyone else. Each time the credit card payment was rejected, I called in and explained that the card was stolen and gave them the new number. However, they did not even send me in writing anything that said I couldn't pay with credit card anymore. I only found out when I tried to do bill pay online.

Horrible experience
I have not had a great experience with this company from the beginning. Signing up took forever, I was incredibly sick at the time so to get it over with I got their prepaid electricity and at first it was fine. It is cheaper per kwh and was easier to set up. But then they screwed up somehow and turned off my electricity when they should not have. I have never used more that $3-$4 a day in electricity and most days it much lower I get a call one morning saying I have $8 and something left an estimated 3 days remaining. imagine my surprise when I get home and my lights are off. I go to work no lights or heater on and in six hours they say I have used more than double what I have on any other day and more than triple my average usage. Not only that when I call to say ok I'll pay it now just get my lights back on. I'm told they can't do that till morning, then fine well let me just pay it now so you can turn it on first thing. I'm told they can't accept a payment. Awful customer service still waiting on a call back about the ovious error in the usage. I am beyond livid at this point.

Dishonest about billing - not reading actual meter
I've been a customer of reliant for about 2 years. And every year in the month of December, I leave my home for 10+ days in order to visit family. And every time I've done this, Reliant charges me a higher bill than I had in previous months for that period of time. I've called them twice about this, and each time the representative lies and says they are reading my individual meter. This is impossible! The first time they charged my $2.50 to read it again, and of course they came up with the exact same reading. Because I was gone for so long, it would stand to reason my bill would be lower since I completely shut off the heat when I was away. I also don't ever use Christmas lights. I live in an apartment complex and figured they are simply averaging my bill with the other residents.- However, they deny this. If they just admitted to what they were doing, I could accept it. But they insist on lying about reading the meter. When I move into my new home, I will definitely not use Reliant. They are dishonest about their billing. You are not being charged for the actual energy you consume. You are simply being charged for what they "think" you should be using! And since I'm moving into an energy efficient home with bills that should average $125 all year round, I would rather not be charged what Reliant thinks I should pay (which will no doubt be $100 to $150 more than what I actually owe). This is a dishonest company, if you can help it do not get your electricity through them!!!

Never again!
We had a HORRIBLE experience with Reliant in 2009. We are a military family, and moved to Galveston for 1 year while my husband attended a program at UTMB. This was the first time ever living in TX, and I was unfamiliar with the various companies and plans. Halfway through our first year, I realized we were paying WAY more than most other companies charged, so I called Reliant to see if they would reduce the rate to be more in line with the others. They flat out refused, so I switched to another provider. Reliant retaliated by charging us a $295 penalty fee for canceling! I called several times to get them to reduce the penalty fee, as it was too excessive. They were totally unwilling to negotiate, and sent a collection agency after us. We refused to pay the penalty; it took nearly 2 years to get the collection agency off our backs.

It is sad how reliant's service is gear to accommodate the CNP not the customer. I am leaving this company!!!

Their billing is spot on ! They always know how much to bill but that's a matter of self interest on their part. They are never late sending me a bill. Their accountants should be commended for their A/R Department (yes this is meant to be sarcasm Sheldon Cooper). Their most recent move was to make and receive approval on an application to the State to have their 6 month plan removed. This leaves us Reliant Customers with a sad set of choices - 3 months, 1 year or MOVE TO ANOTHER CARRIER.
I just made my semi-annual phone call to Reliant only to find that it is now a quarterly phone call. I can always pay them 40% more than market rate to get 1 year or MOVE TO ANOTHER CARRIER. It was like any other time I have called. I get the run around. The I speak with a Supervisor. This time - the Supervisor merely repeats the same plans and with little care or concern. When I questioned the approach he remarked "you can choose to MOVE TO ANOTHER CARRIER". I was astounded with the blatant disregard for the Customer. He then made his "matter of fact" and robotic scripted comment - Do you accept this new rate and term ?
It does bring new meaning to the term free market when the seller loses sight of the buyer. So - for those of you who read this post and if you have time to waste and money to burn - CHOOSE Reliant. For everyone else - MOVE TO ANOTHER CARRIER - Eduardo said to.

Billing / Website Issues
I had issues with my payments thru Reliant's portal not going thru. Reliant said the request for funds were denied from my bank (Chase). I sat with Chase on the phone with Reliant for an hour verifying that NO request and/or denial of funds had ever been processes to and/or from the bank. Very frustrating.

Did not honor promise and waste customer time for $13
I bought a new place and scheduled people to renovate right away. I paid Reliant an expedited fee to have service turned on same day after another company's guy did not show up or return calls asking where he was. Rep tells me for sure to expect electricity by end of the day. Nothing day one. Called them on day 2. They called main electric service and told me everything is good to go and that it was on my end. My contractor checked everything and no go. Said if they send someone out I will be charged if it was from my doing. So decided to wait to the afternoon to see if lights would come on....Day 3, still nothing. My guys checked all systems again and no issues. So, I called again and complained and demanded refund of extra fee to have same day service. The rep appologize for what occurred and promised me that I will get my refund but have to wait until a bill is established even though an extra charge was seen. When bill came they would not take it off bc main company will not refund them citing they found nothing wrong on their end. They waisted so much of my time and refused do the right thing, return $13 that they in no way earned. Only $13!!! Instead they pay reps and managers to hear me complain and post the truth of my ordeal on line. My contractors lost 3 days of work and I must of spent at least 2 hours on the phone with them. It's obviously I can't do much with $13, but I felt I was not taken cared of from the get go. They reminded me that I will be charged $200 if I break the 1 yr contract. That, I can afford.

Reliant has fraudulent rates
When a Reliant customer whose agreement is expiring electronically signs on to their account, they get a message about preferred rates for a being a loyal customer and resigning. However, the only rates they see and are allowed you to choose from are much higher than their normal rates, in some cases over 50% higher. In addition to being a sleazy business practice, this constitutes false advertising and fraud.
In addition, Reliant claims to offer variable rates but do not. Their plans only go up; not down. Instead of going down they come out with a new lower plan so that they wont have to actually reduce anyones rates. For example, they offered a month/month plan called Reliant Basic Power Flex Plan at 8.1 cents a kWh. When they decided to lower their month/month rate they did away with that plan so that they would not have to reduce the rate of anyone who had that plan and came out with the Reliant Clear Flex Plan, which is 7.9 cents kWh. Everything else was the same in the two plans. Thats fraud.

Signed up with 2.9 cents initially and it continuously kept increasing each month until it cost 14.9 per month including centrepoint charges. I still will recover that cost in the money that I save going with another company in a couple of months time. Reliant is in business for one thing only....MONEY!!! Reliant Energy High Bill
I have been in my home for 16 years and been with Reliant the entire time. My highest usage over that time period was around 4000 kWh. I was shocked at this months bill as it was almost double what I usually pay. They are saying I used 7041 kWh. No one will help! Spent over two hours on the phone with supervisors and asked what I needed to do to place a formal complaint. They told me there was no such process. I guess that loyalty does not matter to this company! They have yet to do anything to prove to me that they care. I will be changing providers today!

I have nothing good to say about Reliant. They charged me for months I was not in service with them. They send me to people to help and no one has answers. They did an investigation for 2 months and are still trying to make me pay 1,300 etc. I paid every bill on time my entire life. They're saying I didn't pay my bill for 5 months? Well then why didn't they shut off my electricity if that's true? (Which it's not). I've called the lady back who confirmed the investigation was over ten times and left multiple voice mails and she HAD YET TO ANSWER OR RETURN A CALL. She told me to call back with any questions or concerns. I'm cancelling my service and I hope no one chooses to join them because if something does accidentally go wrong, it's impossible to resolve the problem with them.

I've been a Reliant customer since 1984. No more. I'm disabled now, & very low income. Do they work with me? No, it's Ike pulling teeth to get the supervisor of the supervisor's supervisor to agree NOT to cut off the power for 24 hours (that's right-one day was all I was asking for) so I could meet with the low income assistance folks to try & get some help to pay the bill. Ii never disputed that it needed to be paid. I just don't have the money.I did not get sick to inconvenience Reliant Energy, but they sure act like it.Even with doctor's statement on file, & a promise to pay from a local charity...BAM! Next morning, power off. I explained (yet again) that I'll get very ill w/o power.Their response (wait for it): "Go to the hospital."How about turning the power back on?Oh, no.So the charity called Reliant back & faxed them the voucher again & the power came back on.Bye bye Reliant. Reliant Energy Review
Hello,I am writing to inform anyone choosing an electric company to be careful when choosing Reliant or believing any of the other positive reviews. We bought a new house, 2800 sq ft, Reliant sends a bill for almost $600. We figure this was because it was first bill. We then get another bill for $700 the next month. We call Reliant, while on hold the VP of the company has an automated recording stating that he apologizes for the high bill concerns, that the call volume is high, and please be patient because he cares so much. Isn't that weird how they are already apologizing for high bill concerns before speaking to anyone??So we tell Reliant our concerns, we figured Reliant would have a good explanation for this high bill considering the VP voice his concerns, sounds like a legitimate company, right?Well not so much.. the representative did not care, he sounded like he was in high school who wanted to get off work in order to go to a party instead of talking to me.Anyways after them basically coming to a resolution of "turn down your heater" we decided to go with Direct Energy instead.... AND what do ya know... our last three bills have been $150-$175, and we have not changed any electric habits from before.I would watch out for Reliant, there may be a few legitimate happy customers with Reliant either because they are not getting ripped off like the rest of us.. or they are not paying attention.

Switching providers as soon as possible - Regret signing contract
Reliant has been nothing but expensive. I live in a 2B/2B apartment and am not in it during the workweek. My roommate and I always turn off all the lights and turn the A/C temperature up so it's not running all day. We still have a bill that is $150-200 per month which is absolutely ridiculous. We got switched over to a month-to-month plan which has cost us. I called to inquire about the raise in prices and Reliant said that it was because we didn't renew our contract and it automatically rolled over to the month-to-month plan. I never received notice of the contract expiring in the mail and they did nothing to help us out. I cannot wait to switch providers and get Reliant off my plate. I would not recommend them to anyone. Also, I signed up for paperless billing and they still continue to send me paper bills which is infuriating.

I had been using Reliant for a couple of years and my contract ended in April. When this happened they switch me to the most expensive rate. When i called to get set up with a new plan they only gave expensive options thinking i wasn't going to shop around. I think Reliant will try to rip you off no matter what.
