Your local CT utility is helping its customers pay their bills during the crisis.<\/em><\/center><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Coronavirus and Your Utility Bills<\/h2>\n<p>The Coronavirus (or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/index.html\">Covid-19<\/a>) outbreak news over this weekend has left many working Connecticut families wondering what&#8217;s going to happen in the wake of schools and many businesses closing. Folks want to know how they&#8217;ll make ends meet if they take sick leave or stay home to look after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox61.com\/article\/news\/health\/coronavirus\/lamont-all-schools-to-be-closed-by-monday\/520-103bc82a-9720-4e21-8a56-754ad053d778\">children who aren&#8217;t in school<\/a>. They&#8217;re also worrying about how they&#8217;ll afford their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctenergyratings.com\/resources\">CT electric bill<\/a> at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>Because we here at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctenergyratings.com\">CT Energy Ratings<\/a> monitor the news about Connecticut energy prices and regulations, we&#8217;re going to stay on top this story to help our customers stay informed and ready.<\/p>\n<h3>Covid-19 Energy Service Disconnections<\/h3>\n<p>On March 16, 2020, the state\u2019s attorney general requested that the <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/-\/media\/AG\/Press_Releases\/2019\/20-03-XX-AG-Petition-for-Moratorium-(002).pdf?la=en\">Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA)<\/a> direct utilities to cease residential shut-offs during Covid-19 outbreakfor a 30 day period. \u00a0The policy is to ease \u00a0the burden on electricity and natural gas customers facing financial hardship in Connecticut. \u00a0The shut off policy will be reviewed again at the end of the 30 day period.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Eversource<\/strong> has announced they are have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eversource.com\/content\/ct-c\/residential\/safety\/protect-yourself\/responding-to-covid-19\">postponing disconnections<\/a> for nonpayment. It urges its CT energy customers to look into its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eversource.com\/content\/ct-c\/residential\/my-account\/billing-payments\/help-pay-my-bill\">financial assistance<\/a>\u00a0also cautions that customers be more wary of scam calls threatening\u00a0 to shut off utility service and contact local law enforcement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>All three <strong>Avangrid<\/strong> companies <strong>Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG), Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG), and United Illuminating (UI), <\/strong>are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avangrid.com\/wps\/portal\/avangrid\/pressroom\/press%20release\/2020\/avangrid%20companies%20taking%20steps%20to%20ensure%20uninterrupted%20service%20during%20coronavirus%20pandemic\">temporarily suspending residential disconnections<\/a> for nonpayment. <strong>Avangrid<\/strong> wants its CT energy customers to remember that they are still still responsible for any balance due. Their companies are ready to help customers with bill paying assistance either over the phone or through their individual websites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On March 17, the <strong>Connecticut Department of Energy &amp; Environmental Protection (DEEP) <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/DEEP\/News-Releases\/News-Releases---2020\/DEEP-Requests-PURA-Issue-Emergency-Orders-to-Protect-Utility-Ratepayers-During-COVID-19-Pandemic\">petitioned the PURA<\/a> to help mitigate impacts for all utility customers. The DEEP key points seek to suspend late fees and other penalties on delinquent customers;\u00a0waive fees and deposits to streamline the connection of all regulated utility customers including those disconnected prior to the moratorium; help for business and non-profits; and creating\u00a0payment plans to all customer classes.<\/p>\n<p>Because this situation can change daily and also effect shut off deadlines, customers should contact their electricity supplier to find out what their policy for late payments will be during the Coronavirus crisis.<\/p>\n<p>We will post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctenergyratings.com\/blog\/\">updates<\/a>\u00a0 about late fee and disconnection moratoriums for Connecticut customers as we learn more.<\/p>\n<h3>Supplier Updates<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Constellation Energy (an Exelon Company)<\/strong> has <a href=\"http:\/\/view.constellationemail.com\/?qs=20cfb8c8a019789bcd89dceb312b46823fe05fa65104a6979dd0d29042c3769154a35a40033e5342d5de965822b8d7e3bc3e1e2f815994f82a1c8b6622004a65c3bd95a1207b791756651e06c7605b35f55de9b796e08acd\">announced in an email<\/a> they are suspending disconnects and new late fees for natural gas and electricity service customers in CT until May 1, 2020. They are also offering deferred payment plans for customers that are being directly impacted.
