Learn why shopping plans at CTEnergyratings saves you money, time, and shows you how to better navigate the energy market place.

Last year was a hard one for CT energy shoppers. Rising natural gas prices and growing energy demand made it hard to find the best electric rates. As a result, many energy shoppers paid much larger bills then they had to. However, our readers have used our handy guides and news reporting to help them save big on their bills. Let’s look back on how shopping CTEnergyratings saves you more.

Are Energy Shoppers Paying Too Much?

Cutting down bills is the best reason to shop for 3rd party rates. However, the CT PURA’s updated Report To The General Assembly Regarding The State Of Electric Competition asserts that many CT shoppers overpaid in 2025 compared to default service customers. The PURA report specifically states that over 65% of customers overpaid compared to default service rates. In the latter half of the year, this rose to 78% for Eversource customers. UI residential customers fared even worse, with 80% of energy shoppers overpaying compared to default service customers. This means that over half of energy shoppers could have saved more, by simply sticking with default service rates. But is this the full story?

More Than Shopping Energy Plans

CTEnergyratings wants customers to find the cheapest electric rates. To that end, we work hard to inform consumers about how to shop the electricity market. We also make sure that CT energy consumers stay on top of rate hikes long before they happen. For instance, last April, we alerted readers when Eversource warned about a $40 rate hike in 2027. We’ve also raised the alarm with more immediate concerns, such as the painful Eversource and UI rate hikes on January 1, this year.

As you can guess, we also look for electricity plans that offer more than power. So, we keep customers informed on plan benefits that have even more value. For example, frequent fliers could earn travel rewards with the Xoom Energy SureLock 12 – Airline Rewards plan.

Shopping Fixed Rate Plans Savings

From now through June, Eversource charges 12.64 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Meanwhile, the UI default service rate is 13.69 cents per kWh. This means paying about $88 and $95 in supply charges for 695 kWh of power respectively.

While we don’t know where rates will end up in July, your bills may rise. To start, PURA recently approved $68 million in increased revenue for UI. Also, earlier this year, Eversource requested $1.5 billion in revenue to cover storm costs. On top of this, default rates naturally rise during summer because of cooling costs. So locking in cheap rates now could save you big in the long run.

For example, the Constellation 6 Month Home Power Plan currently charges 11 cents per kWh (about $76 supply charge per month) for Stamford customers. On top of beating either utility default service rate, Constellation sends regular energy usage emails to help you meet your energy saving goals.

You might also consider the Major Energy SecureChoice 12 plan. This plan charges 14 cents per kWh, which equals a monthly supply charge of $97. This could beat utility rates if they rise this summer. In addition, Major Energy offers shopping and dining discounts with their rewards program.

Should You Shop On CTEnegyratings

No one in CT should pay too much to keep their lights on.
