Even Eversource Energy is warning its customers to shop 3rd party suppliers this winter. Find out why and how you can lock in the cheapest electricity for your home!

Winter is right around the corner. That means bigger electricity bills from heating and holiday lighting costs. Keep in mind that energy in CT has been expensive for quite some time. But recently, Eversource has made a timely suggestion that could save you money. So let’s unravel why you should shop the best electric rates from 3rd party suppliers.

Eversource Recommends 3rd Party Suppliers

Late last month, Eversource posted a notice about winter pricing. Basically, standard offer rates depend on natural gas prices because natural gas power generators. Prices tend to be higher when there is more demand for power. For most of the country, winter electricity rates are high because of the demand for heating during the cold bitter months. In other words, standard offer prices are likely to rise with the new year.

It’s also important to remember that Eversource cannot generate power. Instead, it has to purchase power from generator companies. Their prices depend on the often-volatile natural gas market. In addition, CT energy bills have risen because of public benefits charges, which largely stems from a 2017 deal lawmakers made to keep the Millstone Power Station running. The deal requires that Eversource purchase some of their power from Millstone, even if cheaper options are available.

Thankfully, you can take control over some of your bill. Third party energy suppliers have more freedom to purchase power from a wider pool of generators offering cheaper prices. So locking in a great rate before January 1 may save you big this winter or even longer. Best of all, some energy suppliers may even be able to bring clean energy into your home.

Discover More Energy Savings

Eversource has also made several excellent suggestions for saving energy this winter. They encourage customers to manage their energy usage by:

Opening blinds during the day. Especially southern and western facing walls to capture the sun’s warmth. Also close your blinds at night to help keep cold air out.

Make sure your home is properly insulated. This can cut heating and cooling costs by around 20%.

Make sure your windows and external doors are locked and sealed to keep out drafts.

Smart thermostats can help you control your home temperature. They can also adjust settings for the weather and your personal schedule.

Finally, be sure to take advantage of CT heat assistance programs. For example, CEAP offers up to $530, depending on household income and size, to help you pay your heating bills. You should also check if you qualify for the Winter Protection Program which could protect you from shut offs from now through May 1. Other programs could even reduce your bills or offer flexible payment plans. And if you do get behind on your bills, be sure to call Eversource for extra help or information.

Possible Nuclear And Wind Deal

There has been a report of a possible nuclear/wind deal between CT and MA, this past September. In short, MA would purchase some power from Millstone and CT would purchase power from the Vineyard Wind 2 wind farm off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. Although it’s early to say how this could affect CT energy, it may help prop up Millstone and could bring clean energy into the state.

Shop 3rd Party For Savings

January is less than two months away.
